Drones went from a novelty to a battlefield staple in about a decade, and that speed is exactly the problem. New technology moves faster than doctrine, and the groups that adapt fastest usually aren’t the ones with the most gear — they’re the ones paying attention to what everyone else already learned the hard way. We don’t need to relearn those lessons from scratch. We just need to actually study them and build them into how we train.
What Drones Are Actually Good For
Before getting into the concerns, it’s worth saying plainly: a drone is a useful training tool, not just a threat. Overhead footage of a training day is one of the best after-action-review tools available — you see formation spacing, movement mistakes, and sight-line gaps from angles nobody on the ground can see. A drone can also help validate land navigation routes, get eyes on a training area before an exercise starts, or serve as safety overwatch during a larger drill so nobody’s out of sight of the group. None of that requires a fleet of them. One drone, used well, teaches you more than five sitting in boxes.
If you do fly, know the basic rules: recreational flights are capped at 400 feet in uncontrolled airspace, you need to pass the free FAA TRUST test, and most drones flown outdoors are required to broadcast Remote ID. None of that is complicated, but skipping it turns a training tool into a legal problem.
The Real Concern Isn’t What You Think
For a group like ours, the realistic drone concern isn’t some dramatic attack scenario — it’s surveillance. A cheap consumer drone can sit at altitude and quietly record a training day: vehicles, faces, positions, routines. That’s the actual risk most of us are likely to run into, and it’s worth training people to notice it and respond calmly rather than react. Seeing a drone overhead is a cue to pause, assess, and get out of sight if needed — not a cue to do anything dramatic.
Learning From Other People’s Mistakes
The war in Ukraine has produced more public, real-world lessons about small drones than any conflict before it, and a lot of it applies directly to how any group should think about movement and discipline — not just militaries:
- Clustering up is what gets you noticed. Small, dispersed groups are harder to identify as a threat and harder to track than one large formation.
- Movement discipline now includes more than just staying hidden visually — thermal signature, dust, and noise all matter, and they’re easy to forget about when you’re focused on cover and concealment in the traditional sense.
- Don’t underestimate cheap, small drones. Some of the most effective ones in recent conflicts cost a few hundred dollars, not a few hundred thousand.
- Treat every drone sighting as information, not noise. Even a hobbyist drone with no ill intent is worth logging: when, where, how long, what it seemed to be doing.
None of this requires us to reinvent anything — it just requires actually building these habits into how we run training days instead of treating them as a footnote.
You Don’t Need a Fleet to Start
Every group should be doing something with this technology — but let’s be realistic. Not every group can afford five or more drones just to run a proper detection-and-response drill, and pretending otherwise just means nobody trains on it at all. Start smaller. One drone, or even a shared one borrowed from a member who already owns one, is enough to practice spotting, reporting, and reacting. The goal early on is building the habit, not simulating a swarm.
Counter-Drone Skill, Without Shooting at Drones
Shooting a real drone out of the sky isn’t a training exercise — it’s a federal felony.
This needs to be said plainly and up front: under federal law (18 U.S.C. § 32), damaging or destroying an aircraft — including a drone — is a felony carrying up to 20 years in prison, regardless of whether it was over your own property. Jamming a drone’s signal is a separate federal crime under the Communications Act (47 U.S.C. § 333), enforced by the FCC, with no self-defense or property-owner exception. So when we talk about “counter-drone” training here, we mean building a skill, not rehearsing something you’d actually do to a real drone in the sky.
That skill is tracking and engaging a small, fast-moving aerial target — and you don’t need a drone at all to train it. A clay thrower does the job. A clay flying out of a trap moves fast, unpredictably, and forces you to mount, track, lead, and fire in a compressed window — the exact mechanics of engaging something small and fast overhead, without any of the legal exposure of shooting at an actual aircraft. It’s the same reason skeet and sporting clays have been used for generations to train wing-shooting fundamentals: swing-through and sustained-lead technique, keeping the gun moving through the shot, and calling your target before you commit to it.
Make It a Team Exercise, Not Just Practice
A clay thrower day gets a lot more useful the moment you stop treating it as solo target practice and start running it as a scenario. Put someone on the thrower calling variable angles instead of a predictable pattern. Rotate shooters through positions so everyone deals with different sun angles, backgrounds, and target geometry. Add a second shooter and a shared field of fire, and now you’re training something closer to what actually matters: working as a team under a fast, short-notice decision window.
Communication During Reloads, and Priority of Engagement
This is where a clay day earns its keep as small-team training. Two shooters working the same field have to solve the same problems a fire team solves anywhere else: who’s covering the sky while the other one reloads, who calls the next target, and who has priority when more than one “threat” presents at once. Practice calling “reloading” out loud every time, and practice the other shooter automatically picking up the gap without being told. Practice calling priority out loud too — closest first, or fastest-closing first, whichever your group trains to — so that decision becomes reflexive instead of something everyone works out independently in the moment. Those habits transfer directly to how we run fire discipline and sector coverage everywhere else.
Know the Limits — of the Tech and the Training
Drones have real limits: battery life measured in minutes, poor performance in wind or rain, and legal airspace boundaries that don’t bend for a training schedule. A drone is a tool, not a substitute for people actually watching their sectors. And a clay thrower day has limits too — a clay doesn’t maneuver, doesn’t carry a camera, and isn’t a real aircraft. It builds the shooting fundamentals and the team communication, but it isn’t a substitute for understanding the legal reality of what is and isn’t a lawful response to an actual drone. Both halves matter: train the skill, and know exactly where the line is.
