Roles in the Militia

Not everyone who joins the North Idaho Militia ends up carrying a rifle on the front line, and that’s by design. Our members come from all walks of life, bringing different skills, different levels of fitness, and different amounts of time to give. Whether you’re ready for hands-on field training or looking for a way to support the group from behind the scenes, there’s a role here for you.

FIELD & COMBAT ROLES
Many of our members train and serve in traditional field roles: firearms proficiency, small team tactics, land navigation, and the physical conditioning that goes with it. These members make up the core of our field training days and represent the militia in hands-on exercises.

SUPPORT & LEADERSHIP ROLES
Not every contribution happens in the field. Our group also relies on members serving in support and leadership roles, including Communications Officers, Supply and Logistics Officers, and Liaison Officers who coordinate with outside groups. These roles are often filled by retired members or those who bring specialized experience rather than combat readiness, and they are just as valuable to keeping the group running. In 2017, several members were recognized with Achievement Awards for exactly this kind of service: years of dedication in communications, logistics, and liaison work.

WOMEN IN THE MILITIA
Since colonial times, militias were made up almost entirely of men. The North Idaho Militia has changed with the times. In June 2014, the first woman requesting a combat role was sworn in, and by October 2016 women were being elected to officer positions. Today, women serve across the full range of roles in our group, some in combat-ready positions, others in support and leadership roles, depending on their own interest and physical fitness. We don’t limit anyone’s role based on gender, and we don’t age anyone out either: while the Idaho Constitution defines militia duty as ages 18-45, we welcome and value members well beyond that range in the roles that fit them best.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Beyond training, our members give back. The North Idaho Militia has taken part in community events like Shop with a COP and the Panhandle Preparedness Expo, and has worked alongside local and state officials on public safety and emergency preparedness. These efforts have earned us letters of appreciation from Idaho state representatives and county emergency management, and they reflect the same commitment to community that drives everything else we do.

If you’re interested in serving your community and learning how to better protect your family, friends, and neighbors, in whatever role fits you best, we’d love to have you join us.
