Militia Women
Since colonial times, the militia has consisted of only men.
Women were only allowed to serve in supporting roles.
CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF IDAHO
APPROVED JULY 3, 1890
Article 14
Section 1, PERSONS SUBJECT TO MILITARY DUTY. All able-bodied male persons, residents of this state, between the ages of eighteen and forty-five years, shall be enrolled in the militia, and perform such military duty as may be required by law.
Times have changed and the North Idaho Militia has changed with the times:
· In June of 2014 the first woman, who wanted a combat role with the North Idaho Militia, was sworn in.
Since that historic day in 2014 women are routinely sworn into the North Idaho Militia.
In October, 2016 the first women were elected to hold officer positions in the North Idaho Militia.
Most of the women in North Idaho Militia are willing and able to take on the “combat role” if the need arises. They are all trained in militia tactics and the use of firearms.
Also, we do not discriminate because of the age limit set forth by the Idaho Constitution. Currently we have many members over the age of 45, and they all are valuable militia members.
